We are passionate about the teaching of writing and want our students to share that passion. We want our students to have the skills to effectively communicate their ideas to others and to use writing to satisfy their need for self expression.
The BRSU Writing Curriculum honors the writing process and provides a structure of expectations to support this process with the five main parts of the curriculum.
| Conventions and Structures | Writing conventions explain how students demonstrate command of appropriate English conventions and spelling in their independent writing. Writing structures include sentence variety, paragraph formation, text structure within paragraphs, and use of text formats and structures appropriate to the purpose of the writing. |
| Writing Process | Using the writing process, students use prewriting, drafting, revising, editing and critiquing to produce final drafts of written products. Use the attachments below to view student expectations and best practices for teachers related to use of the writing process in our schools. The information is organized as Grades K 1 Writing Process and Grades 2-8 Writing Process. |
| Genres | Writing Genres refer to the types of writing that BRSU students will be learning in school. These are introduced, practiced and assessed at appropriate grade levels. These genres include: Response to Literary Text, Response to Informational Text, Report, Narrative, Procedure, Persuasive Essay, Reflective Essay. Writing in school is not restricted to these genres. Equally important is that written communication is important in all subject areas. |
| Appendix A | Appendix A contains the following support materials for the teaching of writing in the BRSU: Constructed Response Format, Extended Response Format, and Letter Formats. |
| Writing Rubrics | Writing rubrics are the tools that teachers use to assess student writing. At the BRSU, we created or revised existing rubrics so that each grade level has rubrics to use for the genres that are taught. In some cases, the same rubric is used for a grade cluster. |
